Module 3: Preparing for Interviews

Empathy in Family Partnerships - Preparing for Interviewing

This three-part module is designed to help school staff prepare for family-school interviews by fostering a deeper understanding of personal identity and empathy.

As educators, the more we understand our own identities and those of the diverse members within our school community, the better prepared we are to engage meaningfully with families. In the first part of this module, we’ll reflect on how our own experiences and perspectives shape our approach to these interactions. Recognizing and valuing diversity within the school community is essential for creating a welcoming environment that respects all families.

We’ll examine how strong partnerships within the school can lead to more effective relationships with families. By fostering collaboration and open communication among staff, we can create a foundation of trust and support that extends to family engagement, ultimately making interviews more productive and positive.

Finally, we’ll work on deepening our empathy skills—learning how to actively listen, seek to understand, and show genuine care in our interactions with families. Practicing empathy is a key element of effective interviewing and helps us build lasting, positive partnerships with families. This module will equip you with strategies to approach family-school interviews with confidence, respect, and understanding.
