Session #1: Building a Championship Team

The Federal Programs and Supports Unit partnered with the School and District Transformation Unit to host the first of three events for the Equity & Excellence Learning Series, which was an in-person professional development session titled “Building a Championship Team: Proactive and Reactive Talent Strategies to Accelerate Learning”, December 10, 2024, 8:30 am - 3:00 pm at Adams 12 Conference Center in Thornton, CO.

This session was facilitated by The New Teacher Project (TNTP) and is rooted in their latest report “The Opportunity Makers: How a Diverse Group of Public Schools Helps Students Catch-Up-and How Far More Can”, as well as “The Irreplaceables: Understanding the Real Retention Crisis in America’s Urban Schools”.

In the session, instructional leaders articulated what matters most for teacher retention and created a year-long plan to retain their “irreplaceables”. Instructional leaders identified components of the hiring process that are critical to building a championship team, reviewed exemplar documents and tools, and created an action plan to support proactive retention and recruitment, selection, and onboarding. Members of the CDE Educator Talent team presented strategies to refine and perfect district's action plans.
