State Board directs Huerfano School District to work with external management organization
Written determinations approved for turnaround pathways at Aurora Central High School, Hope Online Learning Academy and two middle schools in Greeley 6
DENVER - The Colorado State Board of Education during its regular meeting today directed Huerfano School District to turn over significant decision-making authority to an external management organization.
Colorado’s 2009 Accountability Act requires the board mandate specific actions to boost student academic outcomes at schools and districts with more than five consecutive years of poor performance in the state’s accountability system. Huerfano School District’s Peakview School, located in Walsenburg, has received six consecutive years with a rating of Priority Improvement.
The state board directed Huerfano School District to work with an external management entity to focus on improving school culture, recruiting and retaining teachers, professional development and academic systems. The district plans to work with Generations Schools Network as its external management organization.
As with other pathway hearings, the state board and the district representatives discussed the feasibility of other pathway options, including school closure. The state board decided to leave the option of school closure to the local school district.
