A. Portfolio Requirements
Eligibility
In order to be eligible to submit an ABEA Portfolio, individuals must:
- hired by an Adult and Family Literacy or Adult Education Literacy grant-funded program;
- deliver at least four hours of instruction per week of Adult Basic Education (ABE), Adult Secondary Education (ASE)/HSE and/or English as a Second Language (ESL);
- have 180 hours of experience teaching ABE, ASE/HSE and/or ESL to adult learners (up to 60 hours can be experience teaching reading, writing and/or math at the secondary or postsecondary level); and
- have 15 hours of adult basic education training within the past five years.
Please note: These requirements are for the portfolio process only. There are additional minimum requirements for the ABEA from the Educator Talent Licensing Office, such as having an associate’s degree or higher.
Required Documents
All portfolios, whether involving Equivalent Coursework or Demonstration of Experience, must contain the following documents:
- Portfolio Application Form (PDF)
- Employment/Volunteer History Form (PDF)
- Professional Résumé
- Documentation of Training Form (PDF) (with supporting documentation, if available)
Portfolios involving Equivalent Coursework must also include:
- Equivalent Coursework Form(s) (EDU-131 (PDF), EDU-132 (PDF), EDU-133 (PDF) & EDU-134 (PDF))
- One for each ABEA course the applicant is submitting for evaluation.
- Course Completion Documentation showing successful completion of all courses included on the Equivalent Coursework Form(s).
- Courses graded on a traditional scale must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.
Portfolios involving Demonstration of Experience must also include:
- Demonstration of Experience Form(s) (EDU-132 (PDF), EDU-133 (PDF) & EDU-134 (PDF))
- One for each ABEA course the applicant is submitting for evaluation.
