SMYLI: Empowering Colorado's Migrant Youth Through Leadership and Education
This summer 47 migrant high school students from 30 schools across Colorado met for The Summer Migrant Youth Leadership Institute (SMYLI) at the University of Denver, giving them a taste of college life. Over the 10-night program students lived in the dorms, ate at the cafeteria and took courses throughout the week on things like navigating the college entrance process, writing college essays and attending a college fair. Ten mentors from Colorado’s College Assistance Migrant Programs (CAMP) participated in the program, which is intended to motivate and enable migrant students to graduate postsecondary education and be workforce-ready. The students and their CAMP tutors stayed in UD Centennial Tower dorms, creating a close-knit community.
